| Company History
Prior to the 1950s, meeting Minnesota’s energy demands meant transporting crude oil up the Mississippi River from as far away as the Gulf Coast, or trucking in gasoline from Illinois refineries.
In 1955, Minnesota Pipe Line Company (MPL) began transporting crude oil from Canada through Minnesota to Twin Cities refineries. For the first time, millions of Minnesotans were able to rely on a steady energy supply.
As the energy demands of Minnesota increased, so did the volume of crude oil carried through our pipeline system. Meeting that demand often required changes such as new technology and new construction. The last major expansion of the MPL system was completed in the late 1980s.
Since Minnesota Pipe Line Company was formed more than 50 years ago, one thing has remained constant: the vision to provide Minnesotans with a safe, reliable and efficient energy supply. That is the purpose of today’s MinnCan Project: to build on a Minnesota tradition that will benefit millions of Minnesotans for years to come.
